How many species of sea dragons are there?
I want to know how many kinds of sea dragons there are (seahorse related). I want the # of sea dragons and the scientific name of the leafy sea dragon. If you know the scientific name of the common seahorse and the common pipefish that would be Great. For scientific names you can just give me the name of the pipefish family, sea dragon family, and the seahorse family.
There are Two species of “Sea Dragons” though that is not necessarily a scientific designation as the two species are not closely related at All, but share many physical and behavioral traits.
Leafy Seadragon, Phycodurus eques
Weedy SeaDragon, Phyllopteryx taeniolatus
Seahorses are part of the genus Hippocampus
There are hundreds of species of pipefish that are comprised of several genera. Many are called “common pipefish”, usually depending on local. Hence the reason that common names are bad. Syngnathus is a common seahorse genera.
All are party of the family Syngnathidae.
They are all part of the family Sygnathidae.
